The safety of the COX-2 inhibiting painkiller Celebrex® has been called into question by a recent study. That study, conducted by the National Cancer Institute, has shown that patients taking an 800 mg dose had 3.4 times greater risk of cardiovascular problems than those taking placebo. Patients taking the 400 mg dose showed 2.5 times greater risk as well.
This comes in the wake of the recall of a similar drug, Vioxx®. Both are part of a class of painkillers known as selective COX-2 inhibitors. There have also been several warnings by respected medical professionals involving this family of drugs. The New England Journal of Medicing recently published an article recommending that physicians stop prescribing the COX-2 inhibitor Bextra®. Both Bextra® and Celebrex® are products of the drug company Pfizer.
