German Doctors Warn on Painkillers - Vioxx®

Return to Vioxx® homepage on SSEM.COM

German doctors have been told to restrict the use of all anti-inflammatory drugs belonging to the same group of cox-2 inhibitor painkillers such as Vioxx®. The German Doctors' Drug Commission said "the entire class of painkillers, known as cox-2 inhibitors, should be restricted because of the possibility of cardiovascular side-effects."

The advice comes in the same week that US regulators warned of possible heart risks with Pfizer's Bextra®, delivering another blow the pharmaceutical industry.

The German Doctor's group, which had been preparing to recommend its own ban on Vioxx®, said cox-2s should only be used for a maximum of 6 months, and not at all by anyone at risk of heart disease, stroke, or other cardiovascular disorders. They also recommend that patients over the age of 65 should use cox-2s with caution.
